Addison Leon Simmons, age 81, passed away Friday, May 22, 2014, at Brunswick Cove Nursing Home, in Leland, NC.

Known by family and friends as “Slim,” Addison was born May 22, 1933 in Freeland, NC. He was the son of Kate King and Grover Cleveland Simmons. Addison served in the US Army, stationed in Virginia Beach, VA. Later, he worked as a supervisor at Timmie Corporation Textile Mill, until it closed. He was a highly skilled guitarist, playing for a weekly local television program called, “Hayseed and the Country Cousins,” that aired in the 1960s on the Wilmington station WECT. In the 1970s, he played guitar with the gospel group, “Sego Inspirations,” with Red Canady, out of Whiteville, NC. He also played for the “Paul Brown Singers” out of Leland, NC.

Addison is survived by four children: Theresa Simmons Fender (Jerry), of Greer, SC; Cheri Simmons Choate (Terry), of Sparta, NC; Cathy Simmons Child (Trip), of Leland, NC; and Daryl Leon Simmons (Crystal), of Wilmington, NC; as well as six grandchildren: Eric Pinto, Jacob Child, Matthew Child, Ceran Maples, Hertha Child, and Nathaniel Maynard. He is preceded in death by his wife, Cherry McCormick Simmons, as well as by his parents and his siblings, Yancey, Anne, Sherwood, Trudy, Johnny, and Irene.

The family will receive friends and family at the home of Trip and Cathy Child, at 1629 Lanvale Road, Leland.

The family will hold a private service on Monday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to MusiCares South Region (1904 Wedgewood Ave., Nashville, TN 37212), an organization that provides critical assistance in times of need for musicians who have made a career of music.
