Alice “Miss Edie” Edell Chance
Alice “Miss Edie” Edell Chance of Kilmarnock, VA, and formally of Leland, NC, died Sunday, June 5, 2011, at her daughter’s residence.
She was born in Springfield GA, on March 22, 1921, the daughter of the late Teasley Gilford and Hattie (Smith) Pevey and was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, James David Chance (April 20, 1992), and a son, David Eugene Chance.
Everyone knew Alice as “Miss Edie” who really enjoyed life. Her hobbies included: square dancing, travel, painting, art and she crocheted a lot. Miss Edie crocheted a hundred dogs and sent them to the Childrens Hospital in Richmond, VA, and also loved gardening and a little fishing.
Prior to moving to Virginia, she owned a restaurant in her early years in Leland and always enjoyed cooking and meeting people. She was a member of Goldenrod Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are: a daughter, Alice Croxton and husband Mike of Kilmarnock, VA, two sons, W.H. Chance and wife Sadie of Portsmouth, VA and Ernie Chance and wife Shirley of Leland, NC, Eleven grandchildren, twenty eight great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 am Thursday, June 9, 2011, at Oleander Memorial Gardens, by the Rev. Randy Wagner.
