On the morning of May 14, 2013 the Lord summoned home our beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, August “Augie” Charles Popella, 71.

Born December 15, 1941 in Herminie, Pennsylvania, Augie is the son of the late Andre James and Myrtle Popella.

Following graduation from Sewickley High School in 1960, Augie faithfully served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps as Presidential Guard for President JF Kennedy, later earning a Purple Heart during his tour of service in Vietnam. Upon his return, he married his beloved wife of the last 47 years, Sally Jo Brace.

A Celebration of Life and reception of friends will be held on Sunday, May 26 from 1pm – 5pm at the home of John and Samantha Popella, 210 Weir Drive, Hampstead, NC 28443.

Augie is survived by his wife, Sally; daughter Dawn Michelle Pickford, husband Mark and grandchildren Marissa, Marli, Matthew and Malia Pickford of Sharpsburg, GA; son John Douglas Popella, wife Samantha and grandchildren Chase and Delaney Popella of Hampstead, NC; brothers Andy and Warren Popella of Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

    When I'm thinking about Augie I always think of the day we (I) moved all the dirt when you guys were putting in your pool at the house in Hempfield. The more dirt I moved, the more he poked at me, until most of the dirt was gone and he had drank most of the beer. I miss you guys.
