Barbara Freeman Rooks, of Wilmington ascended Tuesday morning May 13, 2013 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCareCenter.

She was born in Lumberton, North Carolina on September 9, 1934 the daughter of the late Earl Freeman and Loyce McLean Thompson. She is preceded in death by a sister, Betty Freeman Smith.

Barbara was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and a member of the Altar Guild of the church. She retired from International Paper Carton Division and later worked part time at New Hanover Medical Group on 16th Street.

Surviving are her husband, Richard Robert Rooks; three children, Richard Robert Rooks Jr., Loyce-Ann Rooks Abernathy and husband Tom and their children, Thomas Abernathy and Cole Abernathy, and George Travis Rooks and wife Lynne and their children, Kristina, Katherine and Michael all of Wilmington; brother-in-law, Charles Smith; niece, Vicki Hayes; nephew, Chuck Smith; sister-in-law, Irma Keith; aunt, Margaret McLean; and numerous other loving family.

A memorial service will be held 3:00 PM Friday, May 16, 2014 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 16 N 16th St, Wilmington, NC 28401. A reception will follow the service at the church.
