Barbara Jane Maness, 82, of Castle Hayne, NC passed away Sunday afternoon , May 27, 2018, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. MeMa as she was referred to, even by those unrelated, led a very productive and full life. Most of her time was spent as a homemaker but briefly she entered the working world cooking at the Golden Skillet at Wrightsville Beach and Snoopy’s Pizza Parlor in Wilmington.
She always came back to home though because that was where she felt the most comfortable and knew the “ropes” of homemaking unlike anyone we ever knew. She cooked , cleaned, sewed, canned, gardened, shopped, but above all loved us unconditionally. She was the most compromising woman, even when it meant giving up her own beliefs. The past year has been a struggle with her own health and that of our Daddy. She was a faithful and loving wife and continued to put him above all else. She would always say “he is my husband and this what I need to do.” In the final days she became weary but refused to give-up. She became tired and needed to go home one last time. She was welcomed into the arms of Jesus Sunday afternoon. He has returned her strength that she needed. Our family knows what she is doing now. She is either preparing a batch of School Girl Pickles, making that Apple Dapple Cake, or rolling out the pastry for the chicken and dumplings. Oh let’s not forget the best peanut butter cookies, crisscrossed with a fork, that you ever tasted. You can rest assured she is up and moving. God will use her in His garden as well. She could turn any weed into a rose…
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Arnold G. Maness. Daughter, Bobbie F. Whitley (Larry) of Leland, NC; Daughter Debbie F. Boyd (Thomas) of Castle Hayne, NC, Sharon D. Maness of Wilmington, NC, and her Granddaughter Angela M. Hansley (Terriel) of Castle Hayne. Angela lived with MeMa and PapPaw since the age of 4 until age 18. Her Grandchildren who loved and adored her are Jody (Craig), Kirby (Heather), Andy (Jennifer), Josh, and Jered. She leaves behind 8 Great Grandchildren; Raegan, Madison Blue, Harper Lynn, Owen, Gavin, Landon, Anyla and Malia. She was preceded in death by her daughter Jacqueline, son Gary, and grandson Jacob.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2018, in the Wilmington Funeral Chapel. The family will receive relatives and friends Friday from 2 p.m. until the time of the service.
