Memorial Gifts & Donations

Barry Lynn Scruggs, 70, of Leland, NC, passed away on April 5, 2023.

If people were items, Barry would be a Leatherman tool. Because of his vast knowledge in numerous fields, he could always be counted on “to help you solve the expected and unexpected problems in everyday life.”

If you needed to know how to build anything, fix a car, shoot a gun, catch a fish, dress a deer, cook a pig, feed a crowd, tend a garden, preserve food or your life, Barry was the one to go to.

He placed great value on knowing how to run, manage, and maintain necessary things, and he had a passion for sharing his know-how with younger generations, and for sharing the fruits of his labors with anyone willing to accept them.

Service in the Boy Scouts of America was an ideal outlet for Barry’s many gifts and abilities, and it was one of his greatest and enduring passions in life.

If people were experiences, Barry would be a warm hug. He absolutely adored people, and he had a special way of making sure they knew it. Barry met everyone with an open mind and an open heart, and after that, each person was newly greeted with sincere affection and delight.

Thanks to his relationship with his Creator God and his Savior Jesus Christ, Barry leaves behind an overall legacy of love—love of nature, love of knowledge, and love of people.

He lived his earthly life extending the love of the Father.to any and every person, and that has left a beautiful, indelible mark on the world.

Barry is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Maybeth Scruggs, and his brother Ricky. He is survived by Amy, his wife of 50 years; his children, Moriah (Sascha) and Isaac (Simone); six grandchildren, Aria (Stephan), Zeelie, Jonah, Seth, Ezra, and Levi; and one great-grandchild, Oliver.

He is also survived by his siblings, Mike (Mary), Cindy (Rick), Rodney (Jill), Stuart (Pam), and Roger (Vikki), as well as a slew of in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who are like family in Barry’s mind.

A celebration of Barry’s life will be held at Brooklyn Arts Center in Wilmington on April 30 from 1:00-3:00. The family asks that attendees wear Barry’s favorite “color”—camo—and bring a side dish/dessert. and their favorite Barry story to share. Pulled pork and drinks will be provided.

Barry asked that any donations in his honor be given to Klahican Lodge 331 of the Boy Scouts of America, and they can be made by mail or over the phone. Checks can be made out to Cape Fear Council PO Box 7156 Wilmington, NC 28406, 910-395-1100, and include a note that states c/o Klahican Lodge on behalf of Barry Scruggs.
