Bernice Hewett Johnson, 78, of Wilmington, passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2017 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice.

Born in Brunswick County, April 6, 1938, she was a longtime member of Ogden Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William G. Johnson, her parents, Charles S. Hewett, Sr. and Lydia Fulford Hewett, and her daughter, Deborah L. Johnson.

She is survived by her daughter, Gail Johnson Milliken and her husband George Wayne of Wilmington; her adopted grandchildren, Holly Johnson Rodden and Jeremiah Edward Johnson; her sisters, Betty Jean Jablonski of Shallotte and Carol Hewett Reynolds of Bolivia; her best friend, Nancy Herndon, 5 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Growing up in Shallotte, she knew how to catch, prepare, cook, and eat all kinds of seafood with oysters being her favorite. She loved her church and she loved her Sunday school class.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Lower Cape Fear Hospice for the love and care given to Bernice and her family.

Her visitation will be Thursday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Freedom Baptist Church, 802 N. College Rd in Wilmington. Funeral services will begin at 12 p.m. officiated by Rev. Danny Justice and Rev. Dodd Mays. Burial will be in Oleander Memorial Gardens.
