Bette May Wood

Bette May Wood

Bette May Wood passed away on Monday, February 28, 2011 in Wilmington, NC.

She is survived by her son Don (Tina) Wood of Wilmington, NC, and Anne (Bud) Clements of Chicago, IL. Her grandchildren are Chris (Audra) Wood of Concord, NC, Donna (Robert) Angelo of Bradenton, Florida, William Clements of Chicago, and Jessica Clements of Wilmington. Her great-grandchildren are Abby and Parker Wood, Concord, NC. She also survived by her brother Gene (Joan) Nellis, sister-in-law J.J. Nellis, brother-in-law Bob Williams and many nieces and nephews living in the Portland, Oregon, area.

Bette’s husband of 67 years, Earl Wood, is a retired Methodist minister and church executive. She traveled extensively with Earl, and has lived all over the U.S. in the service of the church. Moving often (we gave up counting at 24 times), she would pack up and move willingly and bravely to new cities and new challenges. She managed many church offices with efficiency and vigor and helped Earl in every aspect of his ministry.

Despite having a reserved nature, she learned to be a hostess to the many church people who required her time. She gave lovely dinner parties and was known for her graciousness and fabulous desserts. Her grandchildren called her “Lady”, which she was in all respects.

For many years she performed volunteer work for which she was recognized and appreciated. Her crocheting artistry won awards and we keep her many blankets and dolls on display in our homes. She was also a cutthroat pinochle player who we suspect counted cards.

She will be greatly missed in our lives, but her gentle spirit will always surround us as we go on without her.

A memorial and tribute service will be held at Pine Valley United Methodist Church Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at three PM.
