Betty Hudson Nolen, a devoted mother, beloved sister, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2023, in Wilmington, NC. She was born on April 22, 1939, in Carthage, NC, and at the time of her passing, she was 84 years old.

Throughout her life, Betty made a lasting impact on those around her through her work and her passions. She owned and established H&S Sports for 32 years, leaving a legacy of dedication and perseverance. Betty had an unwavering love for homegrown tomatoes and peaches, and her favorite treat was a Blue Bunny mini ice cream cone. She also had a fondness for Skinny Pop Popcorn, she never could get enough.

Betty’s devotion to her faith was evident in her role as the Joy Sunday school class teacher at Myrtle Grove Baptist Church. She shared her wisdom and love with those she taught, leaving a lasting impression on their lives. Betty also demonstrated her love for others through a Handmade Card Ministry using her creativity and compassion to bring joy to her church community, family, and friends.

Family was at the center of Betty’s life, and she was a dedicated and loving mother. She is survived by her sons, Johnny Hudson (Mindy) of Sanford, NC, and Robbie Reynolds (Ann) of Wilmington, NC, as well as her daughters, Diane Thomas (Mike) of Sanford, NC, Jane Hudson of Sanford, NC, Brenda Badders (Glenn) of Sanford, NC, Beverly Kay (Donny) of Sanford, NC, and Lorrie Nelson (Fletcher) of Wilmington, NC. Betty was also blessed with 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren who brought immense joy and happiness to her life. She is also survived by her sister, Peggy Stewart of Carthage, NC, and many nieces and nephews, and last but not least her fur baby Garfield who she rescued.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, George L. Smith and Anne Ruth Nunnery, her first husband, John W. Hudson, her second husband, Thomas Leo Nolen, and her brother, Larry Smith.

A funeral service to celebrate Betty’s life will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, September 27, 2023 at Myrtle Grove Baptist Church. The service will be followed by a gathering of friends and family in the fellowship hall.

On Thursday, September 28, 2023, at 11:00 AM, Betty will be laid to rest at the Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery in Sanford, NC.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest donations to be made to the New Hanover County Senior Center Meals On Wheels Program. Mail a check to NHC Senior Resource Center attn: Meals on Wheels (2222 South College Road, Wilmington, NC 28403). Family can also collect donations at the service.

Betty Hudson Nolen will forever be remembered for her love, kindness, and dedication to her family and community. Her legacy of faith, hard work, and compassion will continue to inspire all those who had the privilege of knowing her.
