Betty Ruth Roberts, age 88, passed away on October 1,2022 in Hampstead, NC.

She was born in Broken Bow, OK on June 30, 1934, the youngest child of the late John and Rubye Roberts. After graduating from Duncan (OK) High School, Betty earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Oklahoma State University and a Master’s in Education from Sam Houston State University (SHSU).

Betty worked for the Houston Independent School District (HISD) for 33 years, from 1956 – 1989. She taught Junior and Senior High School Physical Education for 20 years, before serving as the Director of Junior High School Girls’ Athletics. In 1979, she became HISD’s first female Director of Girls’ Athletics. She received honors from various professional organizations, including recognition for outstanding contributions toward the promotion and advancement for Physical Education in Texas. She received the Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award from SHSU. In 2004, Betty was inducted into the Texas High School Athletic Directors’ Association Hall of Honor.

Upon retirement, Betty moved to Point Blank, TX (Lake Livingston), where she was active in the community. She served as a member of the City Council and Mayor -Pro-Tem for 10 years. She was active in the Point Blank Community Church and was instrumental in developing a summer reading program for school age children.

She is survived by her sister, Patsy Roberts Weyher of Topsail Beach, NC, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who loved their Aunt Betty. Betty is predeceased by her parents and her brothers, Bob, Bill, and Lloyd Roberts.

The family thanks all of Betty’s caregivers and devoted friends through the years, including the staffs of MRC Creekside Nursing Home and Carriage Inn, both of Huntsville, TX, and Woodbury Wellness Center in Hampstead, NC.

Betty will be interred next to her parents at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa, OK. A graveside service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Samaritan’s Purse or the Wounded Warrior Project.
