George William “Bill” Ray, 86, of Lake Shore Commons, Wilmington, NC, passed away on Sunday, December 23, 2012, at his residence.
Mr. Ray was born in High Point, NC, to the late Lottie Johnson Ray and George William Ray, Sr. He graduated from North Carolina State University and was a member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. He was a veteran of the US Navy during WWII and was an engineer for over 30 years with DuPont. He was a retired ordained deacon in the Episcopal church and spent much of his time visiting shut-ins, teaching prisoners how to read, and serving at the soup kitchen. He worked tirelessly to show love to others; a true Christian/Humanitarian.
Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Dorothy “Bunny” Ray; one son, William Harrison Ray; two daughters, Susan Ray and Dr. Steve Berkowitz of PA; Melinda Ray and David Linebarier; two step-daughters, Nancy and Jesse Pierce of SC, and Carol McLain, PhD and Roger Massie of VA; four grandchildren, Seth Linebarier; and David, Jonathan, and Quincy Pierce.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, December 29, 2012, at 11 AM, at St. Andrew’s On-the-Sound Episcopal Church. Burial will follow in St. Andrew’s Cemetery. The family has requested that flowers be sent to St. Andrew’s Cemetery.
