Blossom passed away Tuesday, March 11, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center as a result of complications following a stroke.
She was born October 26, 1944 to the late Thomas Obanion White and Dorothy Koonce White Pluta.
Blossom, a Wilmington native, lived her entire life as a devoted mother, sister and friend. As the oldest of 5 children, she was her mother’s helper in raising her younger siblings. Her upbeat spirit and unyielding courage was an inspiration to all.
Blossom was as capable as she was responsible. She was an outstanding student and was accomplished in everything she attempted. She graduated from Wilmington College with BA in Medical Technology, and completed her advanced training from Watts School of Medical Technology in Durham. During her career she worked in Charlotte at the Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic. Then after moving back to Wilmington, she worked at the Red Cross for a number of years before being employed at New Hanover Regional Medical Center from which she retired.
In addition to work, Blossom expressed her amazing creativity through crochet, needle point, quilting, weaving baskets and sewing. During the last six years her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren.
Blossom is survived by Mark DeWitt O’Neal, her husband of 47 years; daughter Katie and husband Kurt Horstmann, daughter Ashley and husband Michael Fioretti; grandchildren Camilla Grace Horstmann, Eda Mae and Jon Arthur Fioretti; and sisters Dawna White Johnson and her husband Bill and Shelia Ann May and husband Don and numerous nieces and nephews. She was proceeded by in death by her brothers, Thomas Obanion White, Jr. and Graham Calloway White.
The O’Neal Family is deeply grateful to her excellent physicians. They also express their heartfelt thanks to every nurse and nurse’s aides at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. They were exceptional and extremely kind caregivers in Blossom’s last days.
