Carl Edwin Malpass, Sr., of Wilmington, NC, died Sunday, February 21, 2010 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCareCenter after an extended illness.

A memorial service will be held at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church at 2:30 PM on Wednesday, February 24th with the Reverend David C. Wade officiating. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the Memorial Service at the church. At other times visitors will be welcome at the Malplass home.

Born February 10, 1938 in Goldsboro, NC, Carl was the son of Carl and Mildred Horne Malpass. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jacqueline Taylor Malpass and three children: Carolina (Michael) Maultsby of Jacksonville, NC, Peggy Cloniger of High Point, NC, and Carl (Crystal) of Raleigh. Other survivors include seven grandchildren David and Jonathan Maultsby, Madison and Bryce Cloniger, and Gracen, Tres and Ava Pike Malpass.

Carl graduated from Goldsboro High School, completed undergraduate studies at East Carolina University and earned a Masters Degree from North Carolina State University.

Carol began his professional career in 1960 as a teacher and a coach at Morehead City Graded School. He then served as a teacher and Recreation Director at Polk Youth Center in Raleigh, NC before accepting a position with Cape Fear Technical Institute in Wilmington, NC. He spent twenty-two years as Guidance Counselor, Financial Aid Director and Dean of Students before retiring in 1991. Carl was instrumental in the growth of the school and enjoyed watching it transform from a Technical Institute to a Community College.

He was a past president of the North Carolina Financial Aid Association for Colleges and Universities. He was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church for 27 years where he served on many committees and enjoyed teaching Adult Sunday School. After moving his church membership to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, he enjoyed many new friends.

Hobbies included woodworking and building model airplanes. He was happiest when his children and grandchildren visited.

The family wished to thank the following health care professionals who cared for him during his illness: Dr. Jim McCabe, Dr. Chris Barber, Dr. William Smith, and Dr. S. Terry Withers. Many thanks to the nurses and caregivers at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Southeastern Dialysis Center, Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Lower Cape Fear Hospice.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in the name of Carl Malpass, Sr. to the Dr. Sam and Fran McMillan, Scholarship Fund, Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 1401 S College Road, Wilmington, NC 28403

    Carolina, You have shown me the love you had for you "sweet Dad" through our special talks. I know from losing my Dad almost 20 years ago that it is one of the hardest things that I ever went through.
