Memorial Gifts & Donations

Carole Margaret Bohrer, of Brunswick Forest in Leland passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at the UNC Health Care Center.  She was born in Rochester, NY on April 16, 1936 to Clarence Joseph Bohrer and Thelma Flynn Bohrer. Carole would later raise her children in Massachusetts and Europe managing a family of four while attaining her master’s degree. It was her favor towards dulcet temperatures that would eventually lure her further south to what became her true home in North Carolina. The region’s pastoral beauty, soothing light and gentle terrain provided a natural backdrop fueling her joyful spirit together with her preferred pursuits.

She was happiest outdoors, and was well known for developing and nurturing her gardens, coaxing cascades of flowers to sprout from the region’s rich clay, providing a beautiful respite for a host of butterflies, birds and friends.  Carole, also spent her outdoor time traveling, walking and swimming.  Included among her other passions were the arts and higher education. She remained a lifelong learner, attending classes at the University of Wilmington and other institutes, pursuing a wide variety of topics from history, the arts, and cultures. Carole loved witty conversation and good books and was especially supportive of the local book clubs where she found both.  Carole was well known for immersing herself in her community. She was a patron and volunteer at theater, musical, and museum events in Wilmington as well as in the other locations she had lived prior to making her home in North Carolina.

During her career Carole gained extensive experience helping professionals develop their skills through the Dale Carnegie Training organization.  She put these talents to good use supporting community and enhancing lives by actively fostering programs for Habitat for Humanity, The Bellamy Mansion and numerous other non-profit activities.  Giving back to people was throughout her life among her greatest pleasures.

Carole’s brilliancy of spirit was reflected in the vibrant colors and patterns she wore and surrounded herself with.  When she met another person, friend or stranger, she greeted them with a beautiful, open smile, in this way sharing her music, laughter and love.

She is survived by daughters, Lorie and Sheila Karnath; sons Paul and John Karnath.  Also, her children-in-law, Robert Roethenmund and Catherine Communal, her grandsons Nicolas Jean-Paul, James Louis-Albert, and Tiber as well as extended family members.

A Celebration of Life memorial ceremony will be held 2 pm Saturday, March 3, 2018 at Wilmington Funeral Chapel.
