Carolyn Newton Phelps departed her earthly life Monday November 6, 2017 and went on to seek her reward with her Heavenly Father surrounded by angels at age 83. She had fought a courageous battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis over the past five years.

She was born in Wilmington, NC September 9, 1934, daughter of George T. and Mattie Lou Graham Newton. She was raised in the Winter Park area and graduated from New Hanover High School, Class of 1952. Having lived for the past 42 years at Middle Sound on the Waterway, she loved outdoor activities including planting her flowers, boating, fishing, water skiing and trips to the beach. She loved to entertain and be surrounded with our many friends and outdoor cookouts. Carolyn was predeceased by her parents and her two children from her first marriage Mark N Shepard and Tracy W Shepard,  her grandson Justin M. Shepard, and her sister, Judy N. Ross.

She is survived by her husband Ronald “Ron” Phelps, her son Steve Shepard and her brother Harry T. Newton and wife Sue, nieces Jennifer N Shirley(Dereck), nephew Jeremy Newton(Amber), grandchildren Andrew M Shepard, Krista Prows(Ty), Caroline Shepard, a Daughter-in-law Leigh Ann Shepard.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 5-7 PM  at Wilmington Funeral Chapel and where Funeral Services will be held  Friday morning at 11:00 AM with burial to follow at Oleander Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers are Keith Parker, Jeremy Newton, Bill Carney, Tommy Watters, Glenn Allen and Andy Shepard.

I want to recognize Belinda McPherson, MD, Linda Calhoun, MD, Ashley Forstek, MD and Mitchell Lee, MD for providing excellent care for Carolyn over the past years. Her brief care at New Hanover Regional Medical Center and Cape Fear Hospice were outstanding and for this we are grateful. We want to thank all her friends and family for their support during her illness. We will miss her daily but she now is reunited with family who went before her. Heaven has added another angel.
