Annie Caroline “Carolyn” Sparkman Pearce departed this earth on January 20th, 2017, for her Heavenly Father.
Carolyn was born May 12, 1924, and lived her entire life in Wilmington. She was saved at an early age and joined First Baptist Church. She graduated from New Hanover High School and immediately went to work for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad.
Carolyn married the love of her life, Lacy, and they had one daughter Bettie Anne. Carolyn was a devoted mother and homemaker for the rest of her life. An excellent seamstress, she made all of her daughter’s dance costumes and party clothes. She excelled at cross-stitch and crocheting. She even tried painting through a local art shop. She enjoyed entertaining, gardening, walking (especially on the beach), dancing, party and duplicate bridge, and she was an avid reader. She and Lacy enjoyed having their grandchildren for a week every summer.
Carolyn was a Sunday School teacher at Sunset Park Baptist Church and made a lasting impression on those in her classes. She was a volunteer at Sunset Park, Winter Park and First Baptist churches. She was among the first group of “Pink Ladies” at New Hanover Memorial Hospital. She was also a member of Hanover Seaside Club where summers were spent spending time with her family. She lived an active life until health problems interfered.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Lacy Davis Pearce; her parents, Richard and Flossie Sparkman; two brothers, Richard and Franklin “Tiny” Sparkman; and one sister, Jean Azzara. She is survived by her daughter, Bettie Anne West (Thomas); grandson, David (Jenn); granddaughter, Lacey Anne Kingston (Kevin); two great-grandchildren, Riley West and Darcy Kingston; her sister, Mary Sue Hutchins (Bob); her life-long friend, Dorothy Miller; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. She was very fortunate to receive care and friendship from Linda Jones, Nancy Lewis and Peggy Moore. Thank you to Drs. Mark Murphy and Kathryn Murphy for their compassion and care over the years. Her final days were spent at Lower Cape Fear Hospice where she and her family received excellent care from the Staff, who have all been called to this special service.
A private memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 411 Market Street, Wilmington, NC 28401, and Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401-7335.
