Anita McGowan, 68, of Wilmington, NC, passed away on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 after a brief illness.

Born in York, PA, Anita was the daughter of the late James R. and Catharine B. Steckler McGowan of York. She was a graduate of York Catholic High School, DePaul University, Villanova University and Creighton University.

Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, March 8, 2019 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Wilmington NC.
Interment will be in Holy Saviour Cemetery, York PA on Wednesday, March 13, 2019.

Memorial donations may be made to Immaculate Conception Church or Lower Cape Fear Hospice.

    Anita was a blessing to everyone who was lucky enough to know her. She brought such joy to me during my time at Bloomsburg University and she convinced me to attend a SEARCH retreat, which was one of the best (and most life-changing) things I ever did. Through SEARCH, I met some of the best friends I have, including my husband of twenty-five years. Anita will forever be loved, treasured, and missed. Heaven has gained a true angel.

    I am so saddened to learn of Anita’s passing. I knew her as a Campus Minister many years ago when I was a student at Bloomsburg. Few people walk through this world emanating light and grace as she did. She was selfless, kind beyond measure, and rock solid. She was a gifted liturgist to boot. May she rest in eternal peace and intercede for all who knew her and loved her. God’s peace to those she leaves behind.

    Anita and I met each other in high school 51 years ago and we have been best of friends since. It's so hard for me to wrap my mind around the reality that she's no longer with us on this earth. All I can say is thanks for the memories, so many wonderful memories. My thoughts and prayers go out especially to Anne, Jimmy and Tommy and cousin Susie. Anita has had such an impact on so many peoples' lives and she will be missed terribly. Rest in God's peace, my friend.

    I was with Anita at SJC and she was a part of our formation team. I remember her always happy and positive about life. She gave me a lot of support while making some difficult decisions that have led me to the happy life I have now. She was always loving. The times we shared together I will treasure in my heart. May she find peace and be free of pain with her God and Savior.
