Charles Julian Hegler, Jr. passed away peacefully on Tuesday July 4, 2023, at the age of 64.
Charles born on February 13, 1959, in Dade County, FL, Charles was a beloved member of the Wilmington community. His untimely departure leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him.
Charles dedicated several years of his life to retail sales, working at Rooms to Go in Wilmington. He approached his work with dedication and a warm smile, making countless connections with customers and colleagues along the way. Outside of his professional life, Charles had a deep passion for fishing, hunting, and riding his ATV in his younger years. These hobbies allowed him to connect with nature and find solace in its beauty.
In addition to his work and interests, Charles actively participated in various community activities. He proudly served as a Member of the Parish Council at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, where his commitment to the church community was greatly appreciated. Charles’s involvement extended beyond his religious affiliations; he also served as a former Boy Scout Troop leader and a football coach for the Wilmington Pop Warner Bengals. Through these roles, he positively influenced the lives of many young individuals in his community.
Charles was preceded in death by his father, Charles Julian Hegler, his mother, Sophia Georgiades Copes, his son Seth Hegler, his brother Joe Hegler, his nephews Ward Godwin and Michael Godwin, his Aunt Anna O’Hara and Uncle Carlton Smith. Although their absence is deeply felt, Charles’s memory lives on through the cherished moments shared with family and friends.
He is survived by his loving sons, Julian “Charles” Hegler, III and Hunter Daniel Hegler, both of Wilmington. Charles is also survived by his sister Cathie Perry and her husband Norm of Leland, his nephew Alex Godwin, his aunt Mary Smith, and his cousin Terri Lee Jones. Their memories and the love they shared with Charles will forever be treasured.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 9, 2023, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at Wilmington Funeral Chapel.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 10, 2023, at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. Following the service, Charles will be laid to rest at Oleander Memorial Gardens.
During this difficult time, let us remember Charles for his warm heart, infectious laughter, and unwavering dedication to his loved ones and community. May his soul find eternal peace and his memory forever be a blessing to all who knew him.
