Christine Marie Vadney-Cawley

January 7, 1972 - August 17, 2016
Christine Marie Vadney-Cawley

Christine Christine Marie Vadney-Cawley, 44, of Whiteville, North Carolina, passed away in the early morning hours of Tuesday August 16, 2016, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Christine was born on January 7, 1972, at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, N.Y. She grew up in Laurens, N.Y., and attended Laurens Central School. Christine was active with the Laurens Jaguars Color Guard team throughout her high school years. She also attended the Utica School of Commerce in Oneonta in the early 1990s where she earned a Business Degree.
Christine worked for many years as an office manager for Mackie Marketing Associates in Cooperstown, followed by several years at Bassett, in the Transcription department.

Christine’s was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she discovered a love of genealogy. She worked in the Family History Center at the Oneonta Branch each Wednesday evening for years, helping countless people learn about their ancestry while also researching her own ancestry. She has extensive files and photos and memoirs of her own family history, and enjoyed helping others make similar discoveries. Her main hobby has been spending hours upon hours doing family history “indexing.”

She also worked with the primary children and the youth in the church, and developed close friendships with those she taught, watching them go from primary age, through the youth program, and onto adulthood, having families of their own.
At the end of 2005, Christine and her husband moved to Whiteville, N.C., “in search of warm weather,” as she put it at the time. Later that year she gave birth to her son, Nathan, who was the light of her life.

Christine had the gift of knowledge; she received her Associates Degree in General Education at Southeastern Community College in Whiteville, and was working toward a degree in Elementary Education through the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. Christine also worked in the Academic Skills Lab at S.C.C., tutoring other students on a wide variety of subjects.

Her beautiful smile would light up any room, and she carried that bright smile into the last moments of her life. She was especially humble, oftentimes putting her own needs and comfort aside to help others. She was a rock and was a strong foundation for her family and friends. She truly had the Light of Christ in her heart and soul and never hesitated to share that light with all who she came into contact.

Christine is survived by her husband, Christopher Cawley, 42, and her son, Nathan William Cawley, 9, of Whiteville, N.C. She is also survived by her parents, David Vadney and Sandra (Oliver) Vadney, of Otego, N.Y., a brother, sister-in-law, and nephew, Clinton Vadney, Christine (Miller) Vadney, and Gabriel Clinton Vadney, respectively, of Otego, N.Y., as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A memorial service will take place at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 106 Howard Street, Tabor City, N.C., at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday August 20, 2016. A memorial service for friends and family in New York will take place at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Balmoral Drive, Oneonta, N.Y., with the date and time to be announced. She will be buried at the Union Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, in Hillsborough, N.C.
