The beautiful soul of Cora Lee Hammonds transitioned from Earth to Glory on
September 1, 2019 in Locust, North Carolina while she was surrounded by her loved ones.
Cora, was born in Lumberton, North Carolina born on December 31, 1946 to Grady and
Lizzie Hammonds. She was one of seven children. Cora was a bright and curious child
who loved her family. This unconditional love for family matured as she had a family of
her own consisting of six children, seventeen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
Cora received her formal education in the Robeson County Public School system. She
excelled in the classroom, however, her real passion was culinary arts. For thirty-five years,
Cora was the Head Chef at Whitey’s restaurant. At an early age she gave her life to Christ.
For many years, Cora was a faithful member of the Swan’s Creek Missionary
Baptist Church in Hope Mills, North Carolina.
Cora was preceded in death by her son and daughter , James and Mary Chavis, her grand-
son, Santrell Hall, as well as her sister, Truly McClean.
Cora leaves to cherish her memory, her very special friend, Ray Long, her children Cynthia (Michael),
Charles, Sr. (Karen), Stanley (Angelique), Erwin and her siblings Grady, Hattie, Mary Louise (James), Edward (Rosa) and Carol (Jake). Cora was blessed to have seventeen grandchildren: James “Buck”, Christian, Charles (Erica), James “JJ”, Raygine, Marissa, Michael, La’Quita, Jakyra, Tray, Shacuria, Coraletha, Brittney (Sammil), Jolisa, Curtis, Kiana and Erwin, III (Raised in the Home). She also had thirteen great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends who loved her dearly.
