Delores Jean Keifer “Dee”


DELORES JEAN KEIFER “DEE” age 81, of Wilmington, passed away on June 20, 2016 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice.

Dee was born to Dorothy and Ivan Hollis on August 16, 1934, in Dubois, PA.

Dee grew up in Jamestown, NY and later married the love of her life, Gordon Keifer on September, 3, 1954, at First Lutheran Church, Jamestown, NY.

Dee was employed by Rogerson & Hughes Law Firm in Jamestown, until July 1959 when they made their final move to Wilmington. While living in Wilmington, Dee received an Associate’s Degree from UNCW in Nursing. Dee worked in Labor and Delivery at New Hanover Memorial Hospital for almost 16 years. During that time she also earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from UNCW. After a brief hiatus, Dee worked for several years as a Family Planning Nurse at the Pender County Health Department, Dee volunteered with the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and also worked as a Private Duty Nurse.

Dee volunteered with the KAIROS Prison Ministry, and sang in the Chancel Choir at St. Andrews Covenant Presbyterian Church, was an active member of The Order of St. Luke and became a Lay Reader and member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Wilmington; she was also active in the Cursillo Movement.

Dee loved music and travel, especially in Central Europe. Her sweet personality attracted many friends at home and abroad. Dee had a heart for the helpless and disenfranchised. and often opened her home and purse to those in need. Dee loved children, dogs, flowers, good food, wine, dark chocolate, good literature, legitimate theater, live music, and was always open to new adventures in foreign and domestic venues.

Dee is survived by her loving husband Gordon Keifer, daughters Pam Windley and husband David of Lexington, NC; Amy Streich and husband John of Winter Springs, FL; Sally Murray and husband Rodney of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren Leah Windley, Matthew Streich, Allyson Murray and Jennifer Murray; sister Carol Palmquist and husband Jack of Glendora, CA, Beverly Eggleston.

Dee leaves behind a loving family, precious memories, and a world made brighter by her presence in it. All who knew her are richer for having been near her and look forward to meeting her on the other side.

RIP Sweet Dee…..until we meet again.

A service to celebrate Dee’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday June 27, 2016 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 16 N.16th Street Wilmington, NC 28401. Reverend Dena Bearl Whalen officiating.
