Memorial Gifts & Donations

Devon Jamie Horniman (McDermott), age 37 of Wilmington, NC, passed away unexpectedly on June 26, 2021 in Tabor City, NC.

Devon was born in North Hempstead, NY on March 23, 1984 to James Joseph and Darian Stephanie McDermott.

The first thing everyone noticed when they met Devon was her beautiful smile. She developed her passion for horses and riding at a very early age and was happiest when she was teaching her students or riding her beloved horse, Lizzie.

In addition to her love of horses, she loved saving and treating small animals and had recently started working with them at Needham Veterinary Hospital in Wilmington.

Although she had a passion for animals, her true heart and soul was her husband, Nathan, and their two young children, Grayson James and Charlotte Rose. When she was with her children, her face was glowing with pride and love for them.

Her parents, James and Darian, supported her in all of her dreams and were so proud of the mother and woman she had become. She was a best friend to her sister, Darby, and every uncle’s dream niece, as her Uncle Paul Fedyk would often proclaim.

Devon is survived by her husband Nathan Horniman, their two children Grayson James (3) and Charlotte Rose (1), her parents James and Darian McDermott, her sister Darby McDermott, and her uncle Paul Fedyk.

A Memorial Service is planned at Sunnyfield Equestrian Farm at 1861 Ten Mile Road Tabor City, NC 28463 at 12:00 noon on Saturday, July 10, 2021. Everyone is welcome.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in Devon’s name to the ASPCA

Devon, words can't describe the impact you made on Scarlett and I. I'll treasure all our lil talks at the barn and you teaching Scarlett so much about horses! It was a honor to know you. Your passion for horses will live on in so many girls lives.

My heart is so sad for Devon’s family, loved ones and students. I got back into riding as an adult, after a several year long hiatus. She was a superior instructor and empathetic person. She was a brave, technical and strong rider. I’m so grateful to have learned from her and will cherish my riding memories at Sunnyfield. Thank you for a wonderful period in my life, Devon. I’m so so honored to have gotten to ride with you.
