Angel Georgiev Krastev, MD, 89 of Wilmington passed away June 8, 2010.

He was born November 19, 1920 in Moravitsa, Bulgaria.

Dr. Georgiev graduated with excellence from Classic Class of 1939 from Vratsa High School. Part of his education included Latin language. He was a passionate choir singer and enjoyed participating in church choirs. Graduated from Sofia Medical School and 1951 became the third Board Certified Ophthalmologist in Bulgaria. During his medical school he was leader of the school’s opposition party against the communism in Bulgaria. In the following decades that earned him significant political, psychological and moral oppression from the government, as well as significant career setbacks. Despite all, he remained truthful to his high moral and ethical standards. He practiced ophthalmology in Bulgaria, Algeria, Libya, and Tunisia until 1992. He was a great role model for both of his sons, great companion, and fun person to be around.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Siyka Georgiev, sons George and Boyan Georgiev, daughters-in-law Magdalena and Irina Georgiev, grandchildren Elena Schnorbus, Maria Tortorella, Anastassiya and George Georgiev, great-grandchildren Gabriella and Nickolas Schnorbus, Kate and Mallena Tortorella. Survived also by his sister-in-law and her husband Konstantin and Jana Gouchev, their son Konstantin Gouchev and his wife Hripsi and grandchildren Jana and Vera Gouchev.
