Dr. George Davis Martin, Jr., 64, of Wilmington, N.C. fondly nicknamed “Doc Wobblin” passed away suddenly, Tuesday, September 11, 2012.

Born in Frankfurt, Germany to George Davis and June Anderson Martin, Dr. Martin grew up in Rumson, NJ and Towson, MD. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he earned a Bronze Star while serving in the Army in Vietnam, and then went on to the Pennsylvania School of Optometry. He started his practice in Huntersville and opened multiple Carolina Eye Care offices in the Charlotte area before relocating in 1995 to The Eye Care Center of Wilmington, NC. He retired in 2009 and enjoyed living his dream of traveling this country with his wife and friend Joanie D., their four legged “kids”; shelties, Harley Girl, Blu Boy and Beemer along with their feathered friends of 15 years, Ruby, Sugar, Ruby and Tonto.

George embraced life each day with zeal, had a quick wit and was always planning his next adventure. He grew up sailing and much of his life revolved around water activities. He established a love of motorcycling and became an avid long distance rider, highlighted by a ride from North Carolina to Alaska. George was an active participant in Rolling Thunder, a group dedicated to bringing home all American Prisoners of War and those Missing In Action, the Southern Cruisers who support St. Jude as well as the Carolina Coast Harley Davidson Chapter of Wilmington who support Toys For Tots and The Red Knights, (343 ride) honoring the firefighters who gave their lives in the 911 tragedy. In addition “Doc” participated in Angie’s Amazing Race” for cancer research and support held annually at Britt Motorsport who constantly advocates the causes of our community. A champion for those in need, he eagerly gave his heart and knowledge to his to patients whom became family to him. He worked in numerous events and activities to help his community and was a member of the Law Enforcement Center. As a Master shooter and a passionate proponent of gun safety, George routinely won target shooting competitions in his travels. George exhibited his love of family and a proud Patriotism for God and Country in everything he did.

He is survived by his wife, Joanie D. Martin; son, Lieutenant Commander Joshua G. Martin, USN; daughter Alyssa Martin Horne, son in law Matthew and grandchildren Caleb and Katrina; sister Lee A. Martin (Farmer); nephew Brian Farmer and wife Meredith; nephew Daniel Farmer and wife Jessica; many cousins; and countless friends.

Please come and join us in honoring his life at 6pm on September 22, 2012 at Britt Motorsports, 6341 Market St, Wilmington, NC 28405. There will be an Honor ride at the conclusion of the service lead by the Patriot Honor Guard. All motorcycle riders are encouraged to participate in the precession to bring him home. “Doc Wobblins” motto was (TAG TAB ) Today is a gift and Tomorrow is a Blessing.
