Edgar “Ed” Floyd Brooks, Jr. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC.
He lived – really lived every day – for 57 years.
Anyone who knew Ed well has heard him say the words he lived by each day, “There are only two things I am sure of in this life. Things change. And I will be happy.” He gave a little of that happiness and a lot of his special, quiet kind of love to all those who knew him. For that, we are grateful. We are better. And we have learned something important that we will carry on and pass forward in this life.
Ed is survived by his wife, Brenda McDonald Brooks, the person he said gave him breath – the love of his heart and his best friend. He is also survived by his father, Edgar Floyd Brooks, Sr.; his brother, Steve Brooks; his sisters, Gretta Smith, Barbara Allison and Judy Hinson; and his nieces and nephews. His friends and the countless lives touched by his generous and unforgettable spirit are legion.
Ed grew up in Burlington, NC and attended UNC Wilmington. He spent his career working for the North Carolina Division of Coastal Management. He loved his job, his colleagues, his fishing and hunting buddies, his friends and family – and his beach.
A celebration of Ed’s life will be held at Scott’s Hill Marina, 2570 Scott’s Hill Loop Road, Wilmington, NC on Monday, April 5, 2010 at 4:00 until 7:00 PM.
Memorial donations can be made in honor of Ed’s life to Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.
