Elaine Sine Hurt Bednarczyk, 84, of Wilmington, NC, passed away peacefully Friday, May 11, 2012 at The Davis Community Health Care Center.
She was born in Chicago, IL, on October 12, 1927, daughter of Sam and Martha Hurt; moved to Flossmoor, IL, with her family in 1963; and came to live in Wilmington, NC in 1989.
Her favorite activities included ice skating, ballroom dancing, roller skating, sewing, and knitting, fishing, and bird watching, and won trophies for local competitions in golf and bowling.
She served customers in both Flossmoor and Wilmington as an Avon lady for 25 years. Her travels took her to museums and parks to see wildlife throughout the United States and many other countries in Europe, Latin America, Africa, Australia, and the South Pacific.
Her love of animals and nature prompted her to go on a wildlife safari to Kenya, a cruise through Alaska and meet sled dogs in Denali National Park, and go white-water rafting on the Colorado River.
Her love of travel was the reason she joined RSVP of New Hanover County, where she proudly volunteered at the information desk, greeting visitors to the Wilmington International Airport for 19 years.
Surviving is her husband of 63 years, Leo J. Bednarczyk; daughter Susan Bednarczyk of New York, NY; daughter Jayme Bednarczyk and son-in-law Phil Abbott of Wake Forest, NC; granddaughter Katherine Abbott of Raleigh, NC; and great-grandson Jackson Pittman of Raleigh, NC.
Her family would like to thank her other family — the staff and friends at The Davis Community Health Care Center and Home Instead for taking such good care. Memorial donations in her name can be made either to The Davis Community Health Care Center at 1011 Porters Neck Road, Wilmington, NC 28411; or Lower Cape Fear Hospice at 1406 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.
