Memorial Gifts & Donations

Eleanor Chastain Griffies, age 96 of Hampstead, NC, sadly passed away on January 1, 2022.

Eleanor was born on July 26, 1925 in Miami, FL to the late James Stanton and Ruth Connelly Chastain.

Eleanor had a career as a librarian before becoming a High School English teacher. She was incredibly proud to be in the profession and went as far as to obtain her Master’s Degree. Eleanor worked as an instructor for 30 years. Her students all loved and respected her; she never had to raise her voice to keep her students on their best behavior. As an English teacher, Eleanor was an avid reader. She especially loved researching genealogy. She traced her family tree back for generations. Eleanor was a part of many genealogical societies, which she was especially proud of. These records are now passed down to her daughter. When she wasn’t tracing her family history, Eleanor also adored crafting. She followed many different paths and created many projects.

Eleanor is survived by her daughter Lisa Griffies and her son Marc Griffies, as well as her granddaughter Trece Biddle. In addition to her aforementioned parents, Eleanor is predeceased by her husband of 32 years Clyde Griffies, who passed in 1979, and her sister Dorothy Smith.

There are no services planned at this time.

Eleanor will be interred at her family cemetery, Harrison #2 Cemetery, in Cairo, GA at a later date.

Prayers for peace and comfort to Lisa, Marc and the entire Griffies family. Mrs. Griffies was such an inspiration to me as a student at CHS, and I will always be grateful for her genuine love of language, literature, and teaching. She prepared us so well for life beyond high school.

Aunt Jinx (what all the Griffins side called her) was one of the smartest individuals I have ever known due to her prolific reading which I always admired. I will always remember playing tennis with her at Nacoochee School in Clayton when I was in my mid 20's and she was just past 50. What a treat. She always had a positive spin on life. Prayers for Lisa, Marc, & family.
