Memorial Gifts & Donations

Ernest LeRoy Young, Jr., 93, of Wilmington, NC entered into God’s Presence, Friday, December 16, 2011 after being diagnosed with leukemia.

Ernie was first a child of God. He was the epitome of a southern gentleman. As a faithful servant of the Lord, a loving helpmate, a devoted father, a doting PaPa, and a playful fun great grandfather, Ernie (“Footsie”/”Honey”) Young was known to all by his engaging smile, his delightful poems, his gentleness, and his love of life! Married to his adoring wife of 70 years on June 25th gives great meaning to the inscriptions in their wedding rings: “Come grow old with me.” “The best is yet to be.”

Ernie was born in Fairfax, SC on October 30, 1918, to the late Ernest LeRoy Young, Sr. and Eulis Padgett Young. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Scott Randall Young and his sister, Elizabeth O’Neal.

He graduated from Clemson University in Electrical Engineering. He updated modifications of the destroyer Greyson at the Charleston Shipyard, was the ordinance Inspector in Philadelphia, and worked as an engineer at the Bouligny Company in Charlotte. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel of the Army Reserves in 1978. Mr. Young was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Charlotte, NC for 60 years serving as congregation president, Stephen Minister, deacon, elder, usher, lector and a member of the Senior Adult Ministry Group. He was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church for the past eight years.

Surviving family members are his wife, Dimny Foreman Young; his son, Ernest L. (Buddy) Young, III and wife, Joyce of Powhatan, VA; his daughter, SuZan (Zan) Y. Bramley and son-in-law, Jerry of Wilmington, NC; grandson, Ernest L. (Lee) Young, IV and wife, Yvonne of Charlotte, NC; granddaughters, Kerry Procknal and Shawn and husband, Billy Macpherson of Wilmington, NC; three great grandchildren, Ernest L. (Quint) Young, V of Charlotte, NC, Rylie and Tanner Macpherson of Wilmington, NC; his brother, Marion Young of Allendale, SC; a niece and three nephews.

A celebration of his life will be at 4:00 pm, Thursday, December 22, 2011 at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, 612 S. College Road, Wilmington with Pastor Sam Zumwalt officiating. Scattering of his cremains will follow in the Memorial Garden of St. Matthew’s.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Emily Wade/Sarah Price Family Assistance Fund or to the Endowment Fund of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, 612 S. College Rd., Wilmington, NC 28403
The family would like to thank Trinity Grove Nursing Home for their compassion and loving care. Ernie often commented, “If heaven is anything like Trinity Grove, I’m ready!”
