Eugene (Gene) Raymond Ahern 92 passed away in peace July 11, 2023, in the loving care of Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Center and his children.
Born on June 24, 1931 to John and Florence Ahern of Elizabeth, NJ. He was an avid athlete, playing basketball and baseball all during his high school years. After high school he enlisted in the Airforce to serve in the Korean War (1950-53). He was attached to the Fifth Airforce stationed in Korea.
After returning from the war he met his lovely wife of 53 years Joan Roberts (1931-2010) and became a police officer in Elizabeth, NJ. During his police career he rose to the rank of Captain Serving 32 years and ran the Detective Bureau, ID Bureau and Internal Affairs .
In 1973 he found the community provided little to no activities for the youth. With the love of sports he decided to form a youth baseball league , The Elmora Youth League . He worked hard to get parents to volunteer, found a field to lease for free from the Kean Family, raised donations to buy uniforms and the league came to life, he was the first President. Fifty years later the league is still going strong and he was honored at the leagues 50th Anniversary Gala and by the New Jersey State Legislator for his service to the youth of New Jersey.
In his retirement he and his wife moved to Emerald Isle, NC, enjoyed the beach and traveled the world and had terrific fun. Gene is survived by his three children, Keith Ahern, Mary Ahern of Wilmington, NC and Kevin Ahern of Newport, NC, two grandchildren Keith Ahern Jr, Sarah Ahern Hook and two great grandchildren. Gene was a devoted , loving, kind, and generous husband, father and grandfather. He was loved so very much and will be greatly missed by all. He will be remembered with a smile and wonderful memories.
