Bennett Register, of Wilmington passed away at New Hanover Regional Medical Center on August 8, 2013, with his family near his side.

Ben as he was known to family and friends, was born August 22, 1938, in Wilmington, NC, the son of the late Council Costin Register Sr. and Helen Register Gore. He graduated from Elizabethtown High School in 1956 and moved to Wilmington shortly afterwards. Ben retired from Textilease where he worked as a Route Supervisor for 35 years. He later worked for himself with Ben’s Reliable Painting until he retired again in 2002.

Ben was an avid, scratch-handicap golfer. He won the 1st flight of the 1962 Municipal Club Championship, and placed runner-up in the 1963 City Open Amateur Golf Tournament in Wilmington. He also enjoyed the great outdoors while Dove hunting and fishing.

Most importantly, Ben was a man of sensitivity, humor, and loved his family immensely. Ben is survived by his wife Janice of 33 years and his children Ruth Register Meno and the late Victor Meno of Wilmington, and his son Bennett Scott Register and wife Lynne of St. Marys, Georgia. Ben is also survived by Janice’s children Glenda Smith Floyd and husband John of Wilmington, and McKay Smith and wife Lori also of Wilmington.

Ben and Janice’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren include; Ruth and Vic’s children Bradley Meno, Wesley Meno, Ashley Meno Untalan and husband John Untalan of Wilmington; Scott and Lynne’s daughter Delia Register Smith, husband Barrett Smith and Ben’s great-grandson Grayson Emory Smith of Bowman, SC; Glenda and John’s daughters Jordan and Katelyn of Wilmington; and McKay and Lori’s children Rebecca, David, Landon and Brayden also of Wilmington.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 to 12:00 Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013 at Wilmington Funeral Chapel with a funeral service immediately to follow.
A graveside service will be held at Greenlawn Cemetery afterwards. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Humane Society, 2405 N. 23rd Street, Wilmington, NC 28401.
