Fay Kelly Hayes

Fay Kelly Hayes, 71, of Leland went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, June 3, 2010.

She was born in Wilmington, NC, on January 26, 1939, the daughter of the late Lawrence and Pauline Chinnis Kelly.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Lee Hayes, Sr., her son Jesse Lee Hayes, Jr., and her granddaughter, Kristie Ellen Hayes.

She is survived by her children, Kelly Hayes Wolfe of Wilmington, Carol Ann H. Floyd and husband Levern of Leland, and daughter-in-law, Opal S. Hayes of Supply; one granddaughter, Kerrie Leigh Hayes and one grandson, Kaden Lee Floyd. She is also survived by very special cousins, Carol Ann “Knottie” McDuffy, Jackie Crainshaw, and James “Buddy” Stewart, Jr. and life long friend, Ruby Sullivan.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 6, 2010, at 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Leland, with the Rev. Dwight Jenkins officiating. Internment will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends and family at the church one hour prior to the service.

Pallbearers will be: Joseph McDuffy, Mark McDuffy, Jeffrey Sullivan, Elmore Sullivan Jr., Danny Bailey and Travis Elliott.

Donations can be made to the First Baptist Church of Leland Building Fund, 517 Village Road, Leland, NC 28451.

    When I think of the special people that made my years of growing up in the "old Leland" so joyful, Fay Hayes is one of the most memorable. If you were blessed enough to know this loving family then you were treated as one of their own. Ms. Fay has always been known for her love of children. I will always remember her dedication to our Christmas celebrations at church, when Santa Claus made a visit and each child got their bag of fruit and huge candy-filled cane. I will forever cherish the memories of sitting around the dinner table with the Hayes family and eating Mr. Jesse's famous cooking and listening to Ms. Fay's stories. Her faith in God was an ispiration to all and I know that she is finally reunited with so many that have gone before and Heaven rejoices to have her home. Much love and prayers to you my sweet friends Carol Ann and Kelly and to all of the family.

    There are SO many memories of Ms.Fay, there is no way I could put them all down. She the sister my mother never had, the mother after my mother passed, and the "Prayer Warrior" that everyone should aspire to be. Growing up, she always said she had a baby each time mama had one until my mom had her fourth, Andy, and that because she stopped with three, he was 1/2 her! And she meant that, too! Loving children was her gift; our gift was that she loved us. I also will cherish the memories, like so many others, of sitting down to dinner with Mr. Jesse's cooking and Ms. Fay's tales and laughter. She is the ONLY person who laughed and loved life as much as my own mama; I guess they truly were sisters! ...And pictures...she LOVED pictures and anytime I saw her she wanted to see pictures, and usually ended up taking a few off my hands before it was over, placing them on her piano to view. She will be sorely missed, and her life WAS her testimony; what a beautiful soul and a wonderful example of the love of Christ...we can only hope to be as loving and faithful as she. I love you Ms. Fay, will miss you and know you are in good company right now! Kelly, Carol Ann, Kerry, Opal, and Vern, I love you all and will remember you in your prayers during this time in your lives, but you will be with your loved ones again.
