Fern M. Mello, of Staunton, VA died October 27 in Wilmington, NC. Ms. Mello was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1929. She graduated from Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts with a BS in Education after marrying Roger E. Mello, who preceded her in death. Across the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania , Fern was employed as a day care manager, a librarian, a teacher, a convenience store manager, and a real estate agent before she settled in Staunton, Virginia in 1985.

Throughout her life Fern was an active volunteer always looking to help those less fortunate and seeking to make the world a better place for everyone. Over the last twenty years in Staunton, she served several roles at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Waynesboro in addition to her work for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Augusta County.

She is survived by her brother, Frederick W. Mansfield, II of West Hartford, Connecticut; her three daughters Christine DeChristopher of Buena Vista, Colorado, Melissa Mello of Wilmington, North Carolina, Kathi-Sue Mello of Carmel Valley, California; her son, Alan Mello of Monterey, California; son-in-law Jeff DeChristopher of Buena Vista, Colorado, daughter-in-law Linda Mello of Monterey, California; and her four grand-children, Patricia DeChristopher of Denver, Colorado, Timothy DeChristopher, of Salt Lake City, Utah, Kyler Mello of Monterey, California, and Jaime Lynn Rosegren of Brooklyn, New York.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Waynesboro, VA on Saturday, October 30 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests that a donation be made in Fern’s name to a charity that provides food/shelter to those in need, to CASA of Augusta County, or to the Unitarian Church, all causes for which Fern was a passionate advocate.
