    Phil Michaels says:
I first met Mike in the early 1980's, he helped me out at a complicated scene, when I was a rookie sergeant in the Fourth District. What I remember most about Mike on that particular day and since that he always had command presence, and a rare and quick sense of humor under tense situations. He did not mind sharing his expertise with others, and did a fantastic job with training. He always took the time to explain things and make you feel as you were part of the team. Mike was always a true professional and a good friend over the years. I will miss fishing with him on the beaches of North Carolina and sharing war stories about our pasts. Mike was a true brother and he will be missed. My sincere condolences to the Helwig family, particularly Nick and Meredith. Rest in peace Mike.
