Frederick Hugo

Lt. Col. Frederick Victor Hugo of Hampstead died on August 16, 2010 at the age of 94.

Born on October 20, 1915 in Worcester, MA, and raised in Rutherford, NJ, Col. Hugo, served as an ordinance officer during World War II. He graduated from the US Army Command and General Staff College. In 1942, he married Evelyn Eleanor Meyer with whom he shared 60 years. The couple raised their family in New Canaan, CT. Mrs. Hugo died in 2003.

Vice President of Judd Paper Company, Col. Hugo continued to serve in the U.S. Army Reserves until 1968. In 1982, Col. and Mrs. Hugo moved to Hampstead where they developed many close friendships.

In April, Col. Hugo was thrilled to participate in the inaugural Southeastern NC Honor Flight with other WWII veterans to visit their memorial in Washington, D.C.

He is survived by his daughter, Lynne Hugo-deCourcy and her husband Rev. Dr. Alan S. deCourcy of Oxford, OH; also by his daughter Janice Hugo Rockwell of Hampstead and Dr. David A. Rockwell. He leaves Nanette Welch of Hampstead, his companion of six years; five grandchildren including David deCourcy, Heather Hammer, her husband Christopher, Brooke Demos, her husband Matthew, Jeffrey Guard, his wife Melanie, and Brett Fuller. Also surviving Col. Hugo are four great grandchildren: Ciera deCourcy, Lila and Max Hammer, and Andrew Demos; two sisters, Helen and Betty Hugo, three step-grandchildren, David, Lisa, and Brooks Rockwell, eight nieces and nephews, as well as many dear friends and neighbors.

A memorial service will held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 21, 2010 at the Hampstead United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family gratefully suggests donations to Southeastern NC Honor Flight or Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
