George Erwin Simon, 59, died peacefully on Sunday, May 1, 2011 in his home in Wilmington, NC. He is predeceased by his mother, Dorothy Friese and father, Erwin Simon, who adopted him as a young boy. He is survived by loving children, Jessica Hillory Simon, George Michael Simon, Concetta Nicole Simon and Chad DeShayes, as well as grandchildren Alexis and Crush. George spent his childhood in the suburbs outside Chicago, Illinois. His family moved to New Jersey when he was in high school and he spent much of the rest of his life there.
The very definition of an entrepreneur, George turned his passions into businesses; eventually owning a Car Dealership, Internet Café, and a Power Sports Shop. He loved his family, dogs, music, and his coffee. Always a fan of thunderstorms, the outdoors, and fishing; his other favorite pastimes included rebuilding old cars and motorcycles – and the searches required by these endeavors.
George retired to Wilmington in 2009 to enjoy milder weather and southern hospitality. He would roll around in his electric wheelchair with his beloved dachshund, Rusty, making friends along the way. He spent his last few years cooking, cheering on Obama and the Phillies, and teaching us all that it’s never too late to start over.
A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be 1:30 PM on Sunday at the Gardening Gazebo by the lake in Hugh McRae Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Simon Family at http://www.GeorgeErwinSimon.blogspot.com/.
