George Lee Hieronymus, 53, of Wilmington, NC, passed away Monday, June 8, 2009, at home.
He was born September 21, 1955, in Berea, Ohio to the late Cordy Harvey “CH” and Maude Cole Hieronymus. He moved to Wilmington in 1971 to help his older brothers start Hieronymus Brothers’ Seafood. He was a commercial fisherman and commercial diver and ran commercial boats. He was also instrumental in assorted heavy construction projects in the Wilmington area. He had a vast knowledge and love for the ocean, fishing, and marine life. He loved his family, hunting, and music. George was an excellent chef, especially cooking seafood and creating dishes from scratch for his family and friends. He was a Civil War Confederate re-enactor for many years and had a wealth of knowledge about the Civil War.
He worked hard and played hard until a disabling injury gave him many challenges. George was strengthened and comforted by his faith in Jesus, and this faith carried him through these hardships.
He is survived by his wife, Julie A. Hieronymus, son G. Hunter Hieronymus, daughter, Maggie V. Hieronymus, brothers Harvey Hieronymus (Julia) and Cordy Hieronymus (Ilene), all of Wilmington, L. Glenn Hieronymus of Durango, CO, many nieces and nephews, and his beloved canine companion Jesse. He will be greatly missed by all.
A service will be held at 3:00 pm, Thursday, June 11, at Poplar Grove Plantation. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Cape Fear River Watch, 610 Surry St., Wilmington, NC. 28401 or www.cfrw.us.com.
