Dr. George E. Lindenmayer, 78, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2019, in Wilmington, NC.

Born in Port Arthur, Texas, Dr. Lindenmayer attended Baylor University and received his M.D. and Ph.D. from Baylor College of Medicine. Following two years’ conscription in the U.S. Public Health Service, he returned to Baylor as a researcher in cardiac pharmacology with support from a five-year grant from the American Heart Association.

Dr. Lindenmayer committed the majority of his career to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), where he served on the faculty as Professor of Pharmacology and Medicine. Named Associate Dean in the College of Graduate Studies in 2000, he chaired a committee that revolutionized the College’s structure and curriculum, helping to lead to the College becoming highly successful in attracting outstanding trainees and nationally competitive training grants. He was a passionate teacher of thousands of medical students and mentor for scores of research scientists over his thirty years at MUSC.

During the course of his career as a researcher, Dr. Lindenmayer published (with collaborators spanning across institutions, states, and nations) 58 articles and chapters in scholarly publications and has been cited nearly 2,500 times. His research led to the development and production of numerous life-saving drugs. Dr. Lindenmayer served regularly on Independent Review Boards and other committees on behalf of the National Institutes of Health; on the Basic Science Council of the American Heart Association; and as a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.

Following his retirement, he continued to consult for Quorum Review IRB in Seattle, WA, and devoted much time to mastering the piano.

Dr. Lindenmayer was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mary Pearl Lindenmayer. He is survived by his wife, Peggy; children Andy (London, UK) and Kathy; and grandson, Joshua; as well as his sister, Mary Ruth Riddell (Glenn) of Port Neches, TX, and many nieces and nephews.     George and I served on the faculty together at the Medical University of South Carolina for over thirty years. George was committed to both teaching and research, and served many years as director of graduate training. He was a stabilizing influence through some tumultuous times. He was a gentleman and a scholar. May he rest in peace.

    I have the fondest memories of Uncle George. The fishing trips with him and Pappaw were so special. I never knew anyone who dressed so well to go fishing. I was really young then and didn't realize he was just wearing his older work clothes, (docker type pants and button down shirts.). He was also good at beating the socks off me in a game of hearts. But he would always make me laugh so hard and I always looked forward to getting the opportunity to try once again. He will be greatly missed!
