Gerald Brent Thomas, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on July 24, 2023, in Wilmington, North Carolina. He was born on February 25, 1948, in Wayne County, North Carolina. Brent lived a life filled with love, joy, and dedication to his family and community.
In his career, Brent showed a natural aptitude for working with computers. He pursued this passion and built a successful career as a Network Technician. His expertise allowed him to solve technical challenges with ease, and he took great pride in his work. Brent’s commitment to his profession exemplified his determination and strong work ethic.
Outside of his professional life, Brent’s greatest joy came from spending time with his family. He adored his loving wife, Mable Cumbee Thomas, whom he shared 53 beautiful years of marriage with. Together, they raised three wonderful daughters: Martha Langley of Wilmington, NC, Dottie Thomas and her husband, Michael Wilson of Monroe, NC, and Becky Brown and her husband, Eric Brown of Leland, NC. Brent cherished every moment spent with his family and made countless memories at ballgames, dances, and horseback riding adventures.
Brent’s involvement in the community extended beyond his family life. He served as the past president of the Parent- Teacher Association (PTA) at the schools of his daughters in Wayne County, where he dedicated himself to improving the educational experiences for all children. His commitment to education and his active participation in his daughters’ activities showcased his unwavering support and love for his family.
Brent found great solace and spiritual nourishment at Eureka Methodist Church in Eureka, North Carolina. He was a devoted attendee and valued member of the church community. His faith guided him throughout his life, providing him with strength and comfort.
Notably, Brent was a veteran of the United States Air Force, bravely serving his country. His service demonstrated his loyalty and patriotism, making him a source of inspiration to those around him.
Brent is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Bruce Thomas, Sr. and Bertha Pridgen Thomas, his brother Bruce Thomas, Jr., and son-in-law Jessie Langley. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories for his surviving family and friends.
In addition to his wife and daughters, Brent is survived by his brother Billy Ray Thomas and wife Melody of Faro, NC; two sisters, Betsy Yelverton and husband Carl, also of Faro, NC, and Beth Kelly and husband Kevin of Rhome, TX; sister-in- law Jane Thomas of Pikeville, NC; eight grandchildren: Sydney Jessee and husband Steven, Kendall Langley, Delaney Wilson, Aubrey Brown, Anna Grace Brown, Cooper Brown, Phoenix Brown, and Thomas Zayne Brown; one great-grandchild, August Jessee; as well as his beloved pets, Abby, Mae, Priscilla, and LP. Brent is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews that he loved as his own.
A celebration of Brent’s remarkable life will take place on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at 11:00am, at Eureka Methodist Church. The family will welcome visitors in the fellowship hall of the church, beginning at 10:00am. This gathering will serve as an opportunity to remember Brent’s extraordinary spirit and the impact he had on the lives of those around him.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to New Hanover Animal Control at 180 Division Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401. These donations will honor Brent’s compassion for animals and support the important work done by this organization.
Gerald Brent Thomas will forever be remembered as an inspirational figure who taught us the value of hard work, love, and devotion. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the love he shared with his family. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
