Gerald F. “Gary” Mills MSgt (Ret.), age 78, of Wilmington passed away Thursday, May 15, 2014 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

He was born August 11, 1935 in Los Angeles, California the son of the late Bill and Mary Mills. He is preceded in death by sister, Darlene Borsch; son, Larry Mills; and granddaughter, Kaitlin Parker.

Gary had a distinguished 25 year career and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force where he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster. He later became an instructor and pilot in the commercial sector and traveled extensively throughout his career as a flight engineer. He was a member of the Masons St. Johns Lodge #1, Elks BPO Lodge #532, Scottish Rite Eastern Star A.R.E.M.E Chapter # 372, American Legion, and the VFW Post # 2573. Most of all, Gary was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend who will be missed by all that knew him.

Surviving are his loving wife of 32 years, Christine “Chris” Mills; children, Christy Berg (Bob) and Troy Johnson (Laura) all of Wilmington, NC; sister, Pat Crooks (Rick) of Nashua, IA; brother, Richard Mills (Donna) of New York; grandchildren, Kristin Parker, Kara Siharat (Oy), Kylie Parker and McKenzie Berg; great grandchildren, Skylar Bishop, Lucius Bishop, Femi Siharat, Chloe Siharat, Emma Siharat and Benjamin Parker; and numerous other loving nieces and nephew in North Carolina and California.

A memorial service will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, May 18, 2014 at the Wilmington Funeral Chapel. A reception will follow at the St. John’s Lodge #1 AF&AM, 4712 Oriole Drive, Wilmington, NC 28403.
