Gwen Wunderle Bobb, 84, passed away at home in coastal NC, on December 3, 2023, after a long illness.
Born in Philadelphia and raised in Abington, PA, the University of Delaware graduate began her career as a Social Worker in Philadelphia. As a young wife, mother and child advocate in the early 70’s, Gwen helped to create and launch the non-profit, New Horizons Montessori School in Fort Washington, PA, while obtaining her Masters Degree from Temple University. Several years later, Gwen joined the Hatboro Horsham School District as a middle school counselor before spending the next twenty years counseling students at the high school. Gwen was always first to extend a helping hand to those in need. She was a dedicated and caring counselor who opened her home for extended stays to students that needed guidance for a few days or for many years. Gwen loved her students, colleagues and friends and remained close to many of them for decades after retiring.
Gwen cherished sharing her summers with family and friends in Ocean City, NJ, where so many of her fond memories were made. Additionally, she always enjoyed spending time with animals and she welcomed all of them that came to her door. Gwen was a lifelong, devoted Philadelphia sports fan, scheduling her days around the games; she continued to watch her beloved Eagles and Sixers while residing in NC. In her later years, Gwen became an avid bird, bunny and boat watcher.
Always the educator, Gwen chose to donate her body to her dream school that once waitlisted her, Duke University, so that she could continue to teach those seeking an education in the sciences. She had the last laugh by getting the long-awaited acceptance letter.
Gwen is survived by her daughter, Kristi Bobb (Kent Silhanek), daughter, Lisa Bobb Simonsen, grandsons, Ryan, Justin and Kyle Sukley and granddaughter, Emily Simonsen.
Gwen was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Philip Wunderle III, of the famous Wunderle’s Candy Company. Her family finds comfort knowing that Gwen is with them and her longtime love, TJ. May her soul find eternal peace, and may her memory be a source of comfort and strength for those who mourn her loss.
A Celebration of Life is planned for February 24, 2024 in Willow Grove, PA.
Gwen requested that in lieu of flowers, donations of any kind be made to Habitat for Humanity in her memory.
