Gwendolyn Wilson Dudley, 73, a beautiful angel who loved the Lord and whom the Lord loved, passed away on Friday, December 21, 2012, at her home in Castle Hayne. With a giving heart and a beautiful smile for everyone, Gwen was loved by all, and shared her boundless grace and love – often beyond her means – to those who seemingly didn’t deserve it, just as God does with all of us.
Gwen was born in Wilmington on October 28, 1939. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Margaret Powell Wilson, her son, Jeffrey Herbst, and her granddaughter, Celeste Herbst.
Gwen would often be found reading her Bible when you stopped by for a visit. She enjoyed puzzle books, game shows, and sweets, especially chocolate! She loved her church family at Springview PFWB Church, where she played the piano in her earlier years. She was employed with Cape Fear Community College for 27 years and later employed by Able Auto Insurance Company. She prided herself in her work and was a faithful and dependable employee.
She is survived by her daughter, Teresa Herbst; three grandchildren, September Robinson, Steven Pryor, and Serena Pryor; three great-grandchildren, Ronald Darden, Jazmin Robinson, Somiya Pryor; four sisters, Sylvia Vaughan (Jim), Annie VanVooren (Van), Nancy Cox (Shuford), Sherry Norris (Tim); and a brother, Jimmy Wilson (Gail).
The family will receive friends Monday, December 24, 2012 from 12 pm until 1 pm at Springview Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church with funeral services to be held at 1 pm in the church with Reverends Lester Hunter and Randall Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff of Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCare Center and especially Shawn Johnson for their loving care for Gwen.
