Hal Thomas Hoover, age 52 passed away Saturday, March 26, 2016 unexpectedly at his mother’s home in Wilmington, NC

Hal was born in Greensboro, NC on May 13, 1963. He grew up in Greensboro and attended Guilford Tech. Hal was a veteran of the US Army serving from 1982 to 1988 as a Tank Commander and was a professional Land Surveyor currently employed at Parker and Associates in Jacksonville.

Hal had many talents and joys in his life, including professional drummer and singer playing with “2 Lane Blacktop”, he wrote many songs and lyrics. He was a member of the PGA and set 5 different course records during his play in Missouri. He was a skilled bowler, going to the nationals at one time. Fishing was his favorite leisure pastime, fishing from the age of 2 until his passing. Hal was a member of Brookwood Baptist Church in Jacksonville where he was a member of the choir.

Hal had a special relationship with all animals, especially his cat “Puma”. It seems all animals were drawn to him.

Hal always seemed to focus on others needs by giving a helping hand to others. He loved to cook and prepared many meals for his family.

Our Hal was dearly loved by his family and will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother.

He is survived by his wife, My Thi Nguyen Hoover; his mother, Judith Allen Grizzel and step father, Earl Grizzel of Wilmington; daughter, Morgan Hoover Joyce; six grandchildren; step brothers, Robbie Hoover, Jeff Grizzel, and Doug Grizzel; daughter-in-law, Tina Dang, and two sons-in-law, Mark Joyce and Roy L. Hicks, III; step mother, Eleanor Hoover; aunt Joan Allen Lester and uncle Rev. James R. Allen.

A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held 2 pm Sunday, April 3, 2016 at Wilmington Funeral Chapel. The family will see friends an hour prior to the services.
