Harold J. Markins, age 82 of Wilmington passed away peacefully at his home with his wife and daughter by his side on Friday, June 6, 2014.

Harold was born on August 4, 1931 in Superior, Ohio to Willard Markins and Irene Roof Markins. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Wilma Bare and brothers Johnny, Glenn, Gary, Rick, and Arthur.

He is survived by his wife, Gennie McLamb Markins and his daughter, Tamara Markins of the home; sister, Thelma Shope and a brother, Paul Markins (Jamie) all of Ohio; along many nieces and nephews.

Harold was a proud veteran of the US Marine Corps serving during the Korean War as a sniper from 1951 through 1956 and was a Purple Heart recipient. Harold was a very hard worker all of his life; he was a talented professional carpenter, and did a lot of home remodeling work in many homes in North Carolina and Ohio during his career. He served as a County Game Protector in Napoleon, Ohio for many years as well as a bail bondsman. Harold enjoyed working in his yard and growing roses. He always loved decorating his home during the Christmas holidays with many lights and ornaments for all to enjoy. He was a faithful member of Covenant Church in Wilmington for 21 years.

A Celebration of Life memorial ceremony will be held 11 am Thursday, June 12, 2014 at Covenant Church, 210 Station Road, Wilmington, NC 28405 officiated by Rev. Jim Davis. There will be a memorial service at a later date in his hometown.

Gennie and Tamara would like to thank the nurses and staff of Lower Cape Fear Hospice for all of the special care given to Harold and the many hours they spent with him to allow his family to attend church.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation, 1406 Physicians Dr. Wilmington, NC 28401 or American Heart Association or Alzheimers Research.

    Dear Gennie and Tamara, Our heartfelt prayers and sympathy go out to you both during this time of Harold's passing to Glory. He shares the story of the Korean War as my dad served as well there. Remembering Harold in church as he always had a kind word for everyone and a story to tell to cheer everyone up as well. Love you both.
