HAROLD LLOYD SHELTON

Harold Lloyd Shelton, 83, of Wilmington, NC, passed away peacefully surrounded by family, on May 7, 2016, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

He served his country with honor and distinction in the United State Air Force until his retirement.

Harold was born November 19, 1932, and grew up in the small town of Poole, Kentucky.

He was predeceased by his parents Adra and Bessie Shelton, and beloved sister Ruthie Zink. His siblings are; Marilyn Qualls, Donnie Shelton, Jimmie Shelton, Jerry Shelton, Judy Shelton, Ruthie Shelton and Randy Shelton.

The Air Force followed high school and while stationed in Germany, he met Ingeborg Miether, the love of his life and they have been married for over 61 years. A career at the U.S. Postal Service followed his military retirement. A long-time member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Harold was also active in the Air Force Sergeants Association. He enjoyed reading, music, especially country, blues and jazz and walking. The military life meant travel nation side and abroad, including 3 years with the four kids in Germany; where he became fluent in German.

Harold had a gracious way with people and animals. Friends were always welcome. Our dogs and cats sometimes liked him best. On occasion he could be stern and fixed, but he could also be the kindest, most sentimental person in the room. His early life in Kentucky set the course for this hard-working country boy with honesty and integrity. Harold was punctual and rarely missed a day of work. He walked 5 miles to school after morning chores on the farm, and another 5 back, uphill both ways.

Harold is survived by: wife Ingeborg Shelton, children: Charles Shelton, Harold Shelton, Eloise Shelton-Mayo and Eva-Marie Zahn; also daughter in-law Donna Shelton, and son in-law Joe Mayo, as well as four grandchildren: Charlie Shelton, Danny Shelton, Alyssa Shelton and Catherine Mayo along with two great grandchildren: Hunter DiPietro and Mia DiPietro.

Harold and Inga sang this to each other until the end: “I thought I loved you yesterday and all the days before, but now I know my dearest one, I love you even more.”

Peace be with you.

    Angela Gray Wells says:
He was special to me not only because he was my Godfather but because of the memories I have of the things we did together. He was the one who took me to get my license at the age of 16 and he took me to see Dirty Dancing when it first came out. There are so many things I could list! He will be dearly missed. RIP in God's loving arms.
