Harriet Johnson

Harriet Johnson

Mrs. Harriet “Gerry” Johnson, a 20-year resident of Echo Farms in Wilmington, N.C., passed away on June 23, 2011.

She was born Harriet Geraldine Gunderson on February 7, 1929 in Northwood, North Dakota to Henry and Amanda Gunderson. She was the second of four daughters. The oldest, Julia, preceded her in death and she is survived by Hilda (“Tudy” ) of Northwood, North Dakota and Sonja of Everett, Washington. Gerry is the mother of three children: Marta of Williamsburg, Virginia; Mark of Wilmington, North Carolina; and James of Morgan Hill, California; daughter-in-law Jamie Johnson; and grandaughters Hanna and Katryna.

She raised her family as a Navy spouse with duty stations in California, South Carolina, Hawaii, Virginia, and Connecticut. She contributed to the community of Goose Creek, South Carolina by working for over 20-years helping families with drug and alcohol abuse problems.

Those who knew Gerry know what a unique and special person she was. A proud ‘Viking’ with naturally curly hair, whe would often revel in sayings like, “you can always tell a Norwegian, but you can’t tell her much.” Conversations with Gerry would enlighten and delight most people with her kindness, quick wit, and insightfulness. She loved people and loved having gatherings at her house that were full of laughter, joy, and ocasional silliness. Gerry was devoted to her children and grandchildren and had a special gift for reaching out to children. She spent many years teaching Sunday school as well as leading a children’s church where she often amazed over one hundred children at a time with her creative telling of Bible stories, leading spirited songs, and even some original puppet shows. She enjoyed old school hymns, playing bridge, watching Judge Judy, Oprah, and Joyce Meyers. She was ready to go to Heaven and be with her Lord.

Private gravesideside funeral services will be conducted Monday, June 27, 2011 at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The Reverend Harold Manning will conducted the service.

I have such good memories of my Aunt Gerry when I was a little girl in Connecticut. She was always ready to play with us. Her sense of humor was still very much a part of her personality when we visited in 2003. She'll be missed. Sheryl
