Hassell O. (Jack) Nelson of Wilmington, NC, died Wednesday, December 5. He was born in Walnut Cove, NC, on November 20, 1925, the son of the late Sadie Alley Nelson and William Nathaniel Nelson. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Ann Nelson Mabe, Mary Nelson Rankin, Betty Nelson Rankin, Margie Nelson Whitlock, and two brothers, Charles Nelson and Harry Nelson.
Jack was a graduate of Ellerbe High School and served in the US Navy during World War II. He worked at Burlington Industries in Asheboro and was a sales representative for Uarco Business Forms in Greensboro. After moving to Wilmington in 1965 he worked at New Hanover Memorial Hospital to establish electronic billing. In retirement he volunteered for almost two decades at the Good Shepherd Center in their soup kitchen program.
He was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon.
Surviving are his wife Daphne Goodman Nelson, daughters Anne Nelson Stokley and husband Robert of Raleigh, Laura Nelson Blalock and husband Steven of Mt. Gilead, a son Mark Douglas Nelson and wife Damiene Pedlow of Key Biscayne, FL, and one granddaughter Elizabeth Anne Stokley of Raleigh. One sister, Rachel Nelson Wright and husband Richard of Mt. Gilead, and many nieces and nephews also survive.
A memorial service is scheduled December 8, 2012 at 3:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church in Wilmington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Center, 811 Martin Street, Wilmington NC 28401.
