Memorial Gifts & Donations

Helen Mary Zawisza, affectionately known as Grandma, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, at the age of 94. Born on October 2, 1929, in Waterbury, CT, Helen lived a life filled with love and laughter.

In her early years, Helen worked at John Hancock and Hallmark, displaying her sharp mind and eye for detail. However, her true calling awaited her in Wilmington, NC, where she joined her family’s business at Salt Works II. Helen’s knack for numbers made her an invaluable member of the team, working diligently in accounting.

When she wasn’t crunching numbers, Helen found solace and joy in the great outdoors. Gardening became her sanctuary, as she nurtured vibrant blooms and whispered secrets to her beloved plants. But Helen’s talents didn’t stop there. She was also a culinary wizard in the kitchen, whipping up delicious meals that could put any chef to shame.

Above all, Helen cherished her role as a grandmother and great-grandmother. Nothing brought her more delight than spending time with her grandchildren and watching her great-grandchildren grow. Family gatherings were always filled with warmth, laughter, and homemade treats from Grandma’s kitchen.

She was a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church, finding solace and strength in her faith throughout her life. Her devotion to God was unwavering and provided her with the guidance and compassion she shared with those around her.

Helen is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bernard P. Zawisza, her son, John B. Zawisza, and her brother, William Gernat. She leaves behind a legacy of love and fond memories cherished by her daughters, Bernie Secondo and husband Dick and Theresa Wicker and her husband David; her sister, Marion Yurcak; her grandchildren, Stephanie Howard, Johnny Secondo, Aldea Zawisza, and Joshua Zawisza; and her great-grandchildren, Fisher and Saylor Howard, Laila, Jackson, Aiden, and Ashton Zawisza.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Liberty Hospice for their exceptional care and support during Helen’s final days.

Services for Helen will be held at a later date.

In memory of Helen Mary Zawisza, let us remember her as a beacon of love, laughter, and unwavering strength. May she rest in eternal peace, forever watching over her cherished family.
