Henry Douglas “Doug” Matthews, age 67, of Wilmington, passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2020.

He was born in Wallace, NC on July 22, 1953, the son of William Henry Matthews and Julia Kate Holmes Matthews.

Doug is survived by his wife Marsha; brother William C. “Bill” Matthews of Bear, Delaware and sister Ellen Wells of Wilmington, NC. Doug is also survived by nieces and nephews and his lifelong faithful friends John Coffee and Johnny Blanton.

Together with his parents he was preceded in death by his brother James W. Preston of Warsaw, NC.

Doug worked as a Pipe Welder in the Construction Industry.

A Service is to be planned at a later date.

    Ellen and family, I am sadly very sorry to hear about the tragic accident that ended Douglas’ life. Even though it has been many years since I have seen him, I always remember all the times being together at our house or yours doing “WHATEVER” we could think of to play. All the times we did not walk on the sidewalk, but wade through the 2 blocks of town ditch to each other’s house. Remember making CAMPS out of refrigerator boxes? And, how could any of us forget eating the yummy tea cakes you mom mad for us. “GREAT MEMORIES “. May God bless all of you and especially Douglas. Sympathy and Love, Carolyn

    Such a character , but could always make me laugh . We called him Uncle Doug , was always good friends with my dad , and have many fond memories of him . So very sorry , to hear of the loss of him . Much love to the family .
