He went on to study Business Administration at UNCW. It was there that he met the love of his life Peyton Allen Heitman. Peyton and Tom were married Aug. 14, 1993. They welcomed three children to complete their family: Madison in 1999, Henry Ross in 2003, and Emma in 2006. Tom’s pride and joy were his wife and children, and second to them was Wilmington Commercial. Tom established Wilmington Commercial Real Estate and took great pride in helping all members of the Wilmington community achieve their dreams of home and property ownership. He also enjoyed coaching and volunteering in his community.

Tom is predeceased by his father Henry Thomas Heitman III and Mrs. Pat Heitman as well as his father-in-law Graham Allen. Chad Nimz says:
Tom, was a wonderful mentor and friend. He had a heart of Gold; and The Community of Wilmington has suffered a great loss. He helped so many families, from all walks of life, to obtain a Home. I will miss his friendship and his Selfless Spirit.
