Howard Leslie Kendall, 60, of Wilmington, passed away Thursday, May 1, 2014 at  Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter.

He was born in Loma Linda, California to the late George and Marjorie Kendall. He met and married Sandra Sloop in 1978 and became a beloved father to his three children. Howard relocated to Wilmington in 1989 and started a tree removal business which he ran successfully for 12 years. In 2001 he discovered a second career as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Autumn Care of Myrtle Grove. His passion and dedication to providing compassionate care was appreciated by patients and their families alike. Recognized as the Direct Care Worker of the Year by the North Carolina Health Care Facilities Association in 2007, Howard accepted the award in his true humble spirit recognizing his career as a privilege bestowed upon him by the patients for which he cared. His genuine kindness and loving nature will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Howard is survived by his children; David Kendall (Andrea) of Riegelwood, NC; Hannah Lanier (Jimmy) of Leland, NC; and Nathan Kendall (Betsy) of Wilmington, NC; He is also survived by seven grandchildren Harmony, Noelani, Amya, Tyler, Nolan, Gracie and William;  two brothers and two sisters. Together with his parents Howard was predeceased by a sister.

 A Celebration of his life will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Wilmington Funeral Chapel.

In Lieu of flowers memorials made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation, 1414 Physicians Dr, Wilmington, NC 28401, in loving memory of Howard would be greatly appreciated.

    Howard was a friend of my mother and her husband while they were at Autumn care. He was a great friend and care giver,and will be greatly missed.

    Sorry for your loss, I remember your Dad when he brought timber into the mill and later on after he went to work at the nursing home. I have a lot of respect for him, He was a good man and who loved his family deeply. The hope of the resurrection is there for us all to keep close in our hearts and minds.

    We had many experiences with Howard at Yuchi Pines and loved him dearly. He was a patient and caring person who had time for anyone in need. One of the times we remember was when Howard planted sorghum and we helped with the cutting, hauling and cooking of this product. Yuchi enjoyed many gallons of syrup for years after. He will be missed and wish we had been able to see him long before his sickness. Our prayers are with his family.
